Wake up very early in the morning, it was the day of Conference On Global Learning.
Dress up formally with blazer in my hand as the weather is getting colder.
First, we were listening attentively to the welcoming addresses by Tsong Ming Lin, the Political Deputy Minister of Education in Taiwan and Olga Stanojlovic from the director schools in Education of British Council.
Then, we were presented with the presentation on developing global citizens through International School Award (ISA) by Sally Lees. The presentation was likely with the workshop we attended the day before.
After that, proceeding with Datin Evelyn Ritikos' presentation on developing global citizens. It was about how our schools hold the BCCC programme in Malaysia successfully in Malaysia supported with the photos taken throughout the activities. Datin showed the statistic of performance of schools according to the states in Malaysia.
Next, it was the Thai team to present their on the BCCC programme in school. They had video conference with their cluster in the conjunction of the festival Loy Katong in Vietnam. They put a lot of effort as the school had prepared it for two months.
After lunch, teachers were heading to the students' expo. There were 6 booths according to themes altogether. Teachers enjoyed visiting the booths and listening to the students' explanation on what they had done during the two days in the provinces.Teachers also had the chance on voting the best booth.
After that, the winner students presented their work. Two students presented their power point and they got great applause from the floor. Their presentations were amazing as they touched the audience's heart truly. Then, it was followed by the poem and study of global citizens. In the nutshell, the winner students were deserved to win the prizes.
After 15mins break, Panel discussion with key education contacts from UK, EA and Taiwan was held. It was between the administrators and the teachers involved. It was an interesting one as it allowed them to share ideas. Then, very quickly followed by Panel discussion with key education contacts and teachers and selected student representatives from UK, Vietnam and Taiwan. It was too an interesting one because the questions from the students were interesting.
The students like the topic of citizen so much as well as connecting classrooms as they want for more. The teachers suggested that it should be the topic of citizenship should be embed into all the subjects as well as to be brought outside the classroom. The Taiwan student on the other hand suggested that they want more global issues to be reported as the government emphasized on the local news. The UK student wanted more funding as they enjoyed the activities like they had in Taiwan. Teacher from UK suggested that we have to be reality as that activity cannot be carried out weekly as the money constraint. Connecting Classrooms is more effectively by using the technology we have now which is connecting online. Lastly, the students voiced out that the enjoyed making friends with other countries and they will surely share with their friends back hometown on what they have done in Taiwan.
The day of conference ended at 430 as the bus will be fetching all to the Grand Hotel for Gala Dinner starting at 530 in the evening. We enjoyed our dinner there and we were entertained by the students' performance. Before the dinner began, all of us managed to snap photos with all our new friends. Everybody seem to enjoy the night very much. Tears were shed as it was the last day of students and teachers could get together before going home the next day.

5th day in Taipei (28.11.09)

28th of Nov 2009

Venue: Taipei City, Chientan Youth Centre

Weather: Cold

It was getting cold in Taipei. We joined four workshops today. They were very fascinating and managed to learn a lot from every workshop.

The first workshop was conducted by Sally Lees, the principal of Dover Grammar School for Boys. It was about the curriculum design and integrated approach to learning. The principal introduce her school to us. The school focus on the International Dimension, enterprise and challenge. Inetrnational dimension is about connecting to the outside world. Besides, Enterprise is about letting the students to start business. Challenge on the other hand tells us about students are alowed to make mistake.

Next, the second workshop started at 1045. It was Effectively transforming traditional classrooms into 21st century classrooms and conducted by Michael Leung. He showed us the advance technology that can be used in the classrooms. He taught us how to use the active board and it was very interesting. Every particpant wished to have one to replace the white board and blackboard that has been used for ages.

The third workshop was after lunch. It was Innovative use of ICT for joint curriculum projects. By having very basic ICT knowledge, the speakers showed us how we can get connected with the outside world and knowing what happened in the world. The speakers also suggested some of the issues that can be discussed with the students online. It was a creative workshop.

The last workshop was conducted by four representatives from Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam as well as Thailand. They gave talk on how BCCC was held in the school. They were such exposure and sharing of each country how it was held successfully. I think the Thai with Miri with UK was having a successful one because they managed to have video conference at the same time when they were having the festival of Loy Katong.

After that, all of the Malaysian Teachers except two went to the 101 Tower. We walked and taking LRT to the Taipei City Hall in order to get to the Tower. It was drizzling. To get to the 89th floor, we had to pay nt 400 (approximately RM40) and the view from there was breath taking. Before heading home, we packed McDonald since we were late to go back.

After resting and dinner, the students practise on the next day Gala dinner performance.
